Barkitecture - Pet-Friendly Design Meets Residential Architecture

Published about 1 month ago • 1 min read

Hello Reader,

Americans view their pets as family members, leading to increased demand for pet-friendly homes.

"Barkitecture" is a design movement that prioritizes creating comfortable and stylish spaces for humans and their four-legged companions.

Originally associated with designing dog houses, it has evolved to incorporate practical pet-friendly elements into kitchens, bathrooms, and other living spaces.

For years, the A-Team has suspected that including a pet in an ARDA submission photo is a powerful strategy (the ARDA Call for Entries is open, BTW).

Side Note: It was this "egg-ceptional" example of "nest-level luxury" that won an ARDA in the Design Feature category.

Back to barkitecture, which is delicate to write about without ruffling feline feathers.

Fortunately, we have at least one A-Team member to ensure we don't forget about our whiskered pals.

He knows who he is (you might, too).

The trend toward pet-friendly design that purr-fectly caters to diverse breeds and sizes is growing.

Smart home features, biophilic elements, and collaboration between designers and pet enthusiasts drive this evolution.

Cat-friendly features like vertical spaces, discreet litter box nooks, and cozy window perches are equally important.

Have you transformed empty spaces under staircases or inside former pantries into luxurious “dog caves” or quiet spots for cats

Have your clients asked you to incorporate pet preferences, habits, and routines into their home designs?

How about specifying handheld showerheads and tiled areas with drains for cleaning muddy paws?

What about installing water faucets near pet-feeding areas to avoid filling the kitchen sink bowl, such as this one by architect Patrick Ahearn?

Designing pet-friendly homes requires a blend of creativity, practicality, and empathy.

As a residential architect, here are some purr-spectives to enhance your expertise in creating pet-centric spaces:

We also found a TV series that's "off the leash."

Remember, in architecture, everyone’s welcome—even the occasional birdwatching parrot! 🐾🏠

It’s about creating spaces where all pets thrive.

So whether your heart belongs to a loyal Lab or a sassy Siamese, let’s design homes where tails wag and whiskers twitch in delight.

Have a great weekend,
The A-Team
