Is this the best architectural movie ever? [Midweek Vibe]

Published about 1 month ago • 1 min read

Hello Reader,

Congrats on surviving Monday and crushing Tuesday.

Now Wednesday beckons you to take a break and celebrate this week's Midweek Vibe!

On this day in 1927, the film Metropolis opened in the United States.

Some say it's the best architectural movie ever.

It certainly was the first to influence and be influenced by architecture.

Directed by the great Fritz Lang, it's also a great science fiction story.

In a futuristic city sharply divided between the working class and the city planners, the son of the city's mastermind falls in love with a working-class prophet who predicts the coming of a savior to mediate their differences.

It addresses the whole point of science fiction.

It's not just a story set in the future; it centers on the promise and problems of science and technology in human life.

Metropolis features elaborate special effects and set designs, from a massive Gothic cathedral to a futuristic cityscape.

It's a great architecture movie because it addresses architecture (sometimes indirectly, sometimes head-on) as an agent of technology within the human drama.

The Art Deco movement strongly influences the city's appearance in the film and incorporates elements from other traditions.

The film's architecture was highly influential and has been reported to have contributed to the style's subsequent popularity in Europe and America. Although, at the time, we didn't have a name for what we were seeing.

Art Deco was coined in 1966, based on the name of an influential design exposition, the International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts of 1925. That long expo title then became shortened to Art Deco.

This iconic style still resonates today.

The New Babel Tower, for instance, was inspired by the Upper Silesian Tower in Poznań fairgrounds, which was recognized in Germany as a masterpiece of architecture.

A recent restoration has made the full movie newly luminous. It can be found on YouTube (02:28:54)

What are your favorite films in which architecture plays a key role in the storytelling or forms the background of the people's stories?

P.S. - If the trailer clip we showed felt familiar, you might recall Queen's 1984 music video for Radio Ga Ga (00:04:44).
