Recent Committee Activities

Board of Directors

At their most recent meeting, the AIBD Board of Directors proactively addressed the nation's housing challenges by supporting the construction of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). Recognizing the pressing need for affordable and multi-generational housing solutions, AIBD acknowledges the pivotal role that ADUs play in meeting these demands.

The resolution passed underscores the significance of ADUs in providing smaller and more affordable housing options in the rental market. Moreover, by embracing ADU construction, state and local governments can effectively address the need for affordable and multi-generational housing while maintaining the character of existing neighborhoods. Additionally, rental ADUs offer a means of generating income to enable property owners to retain their assets.

Legislation

Jack Butler, the AIBD Standards and Codes Committee Chairman, and our governmental liaison received word this weekend from members in California about an apparent attempt to add the title Commercial Interior Designer to the Architecture and Landscape Architecture Act. Currently, building designers who are not licensed architects can prepare plans for non-structural elements in commercial buildings, such as tenant improvements and storefronts. A sunset hearing on the act is being held today. Jack has written to the joint Senate Business, Professionals, and Economic Development and Assembly Business and Professions Committee members to express the AIBD's position on eliminating existing business opportunities for building designers in California.

Have a triumphant week!
