Coming in at #10 is failing to back up the work. Ouch! Does that happen? By being aware of common mistakes and taking proactive steps to avoid them, building designers, architects, and drafters can ensure the successful execution of their designs.

One of the nine biggest OSHA fines of Q3 2024 ($451,694) involved a Boston waterproofing contractor allegedly exposing workers to life-threatening excavation hazards on two residential worksites. OSHA said the employer did not attempt to rescue the trapped employee, instead taking away the employee’s phone and striking the trapped employee with objects to prevent the employee from seeking medical attention.

Recent Committee Activities

National Council of Building Designer Certification

At its recent monthly meeting, the Council began amending its policies and procedures to allow for human-assisted AI virtual proctoring of the CPBD exam.

Education Committee

For Design & Build North Myrtle Beach, the committee has decided to have three hours of business presentations on how to come up with pricing, manage workflow, and get the right clients for your company. This will be followed by how to do a client interview (Based on interview questions in the AIBD Member-Exclusive "Designer Docs"), do your due diligence, and sketch out a design based the info collected in the prior sessions.

Conference Committee

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, the A-Team has tried contacting the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Asheville, NC. They have not had any success. However, they reported to the committee that their website is accepting room reservations starting November 1.

Have a triumphant week.

Hello Reader, On Monday, Steve Mickley shared how one sentence in his agreement helped him collect an unpaid invoice in hours. If you missed it, check it out (00:01:46): That's only one example of how a well-structured contract can save time and money. Here's another, more unusual, scenario. How is that...

The ceiling of The Campbell in Grand Central Station.

Although Jupiter is paradise (#ILiveWhereYouVacation), it's pretty homogenous outside of the AIBD Office. We don't have much of an art culture. All of the music is either Country or something like Rock-Reggae (not like The Police but like Sublime). All of the buildings, houses or otherwise, pretty much all look the same. All of the art looks like this: Beach with American Flag at sunset. Beach with American Flag, this time not at sunset. Don't get me wrong: I love both the beach and American...

As the sun sets on October 16th, I ponder the significance of Boss's Day and what it means for all of us, whether we're in leadership positions or not. Boss's Day originated in 1958 when Patricia Bays Haroski, a secretary at State Farm Insurance Company in Deerfield, Illinois, registered it with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. She chose October 16th because it was her father's birthday, who also happened to be her boss. Haroski's intent was to improve relationships between managers and...
