Where To See A Collection of Historical Buildings In One Place [Midweek Vibe]

Published about 1 month ago • 1 min read

The Tribune Tower is a 463-foot-tall, 36-floor neo-Gothic skyscraper in downtown Chicago.

The Tribune Tower, built between 1923 and 1925, is a historical landmark in 20th-century architecture.

It is adorned with nearly 150 fragments from famous structures and historic sites around the world, including the Great Wall of China, the Great Pyramid of Cheops, the Berlin Wall, and the World Trade Center.

Despite the thousands of people who walk down Michigan Avenue daily, few may notice these embedded pieces of history in the tower's first-story walls.

The tradition was initiated in 1914 by Colonel Robert R. McCormick, the longstanding editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune, during his coverage of World War I.

While visiting a medieval cathedral in Ypres, France, which had been impacted by German shelling, he acquired a fragment for himself.

Many of these fragments were presented as gifts to Colonel McCormick, while others were brought back to Chicago by foreign correspondents.

Some of these renowned fragments can be viewed here.

This unique and somewhat eccentric collection serves as a refreshing contrast to the impersonal glass office buildings and captivates tourists.

You can visit it when you're in Chicago this October.

How do we know you'll be there in October?

AIBD is excited to announce that for the 3rd year in a row we are partnering with Chicago Build!
